Frankland Islands, Normanby Island.

Frankland Islands, Normanby Island.

The Frankland Islands are one of Cairns best-kept secrets. Secluded sandy beaches, rainforest walking tracks, pristine reefs and native wildlife. Furthermore, there is only one tour operator able to access this Marine Park (Frankland Islands Cruise & Dive). One of the closest places to visit the Great Barrier Reef, the Frankland Group National Park is situated only 10klm East of the Russel and Mulgrave River. This offers one of the shortest ocean crossings to get to the reef from the mainland of Australia.

Frankland Islands Cruise & Dive have a shuttle bus service that will pick you up at your Cairns Hotel. A short 45 minutes bus ride will have you arrive at the Deerail landing to board the Frankland Island Cruise & Dive vessel.

Frankland Islands are a great place to enjoy swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. The best snorkeling is found on the north and south-west sides of Normanby Reef and on the north and west edges of Russell Island.

Certified divers can enjoy up to 2 x certified dives. All dives are guided by a professional dive master. Diving can be done walking in straight from the beach or by small tender, this takes divers out further to the deeper parts of the reef.

The first dive of the day is usually always the deepest and is generally on the larger drop off walls located on the edge of the reefs. Divers can find flame file shells, white tip, and black tip reef sharks sleeping in the sand, lionfish, nudibranchs, sting rays, trevally, sea turtles, and sometimes moray eels. Usually, the end of each dive is spent at 5 meters just above the corals to complete the 3 minutes safety stop.

The dive crew gives a complete dive briefing before each dive with a detailed map of the site and where the highlights can be found. As mentioned above all dives are guided.

INTRODUCTORY SCUBA DIVING:

For those that would like to try a first-time scuba dive, known as an introductory scuba dive, you can! Full dive gear is provided along with a short 10-minute introduction into how to use all the dive gear safely. All introductory scuba dives are guided by a professional dive instructor. Most dives are completed from the beach. A short walk into the water to practice in the shallows before your guide will take you out to the deeper reefs to see the large corals and marine life.

You can find a variety of soft and hard corals very close to the beach. As you venture into deeper water you can see turtles, mauri wrasse, coral trout, red bass, giant clams, small nudibranchs, sea snakes, moray eels and sometimes white tip and black tip reef sharks.
