The non-swimmer can enjoy the many other activities provided on the pontoon. These include semi-submarine tours, glass bottom boats and underwater viewing observatories.

Outer reef pontoons and semi-submarines are also good for people who get sea sick. The large transfer vessels that take you to and from the reefs, and the large stable nature of the pontoons themselves make exploring the outer barrier reef on a pontoon a good option for people who get sea sick.

Who offers Outer Reef Pontoons & Semi-Submarine Day Trips?

The following companies offer Outer Reef Pontoons & Semi-Submarines day trips to the Great Barrier Reef.

Why do an Outer Reef Pontoon & Semi-Submarines Day Trip to the Great Barrier Reef?

Outer Reef pontoons & semi-submarine day trips to the reef extend the amount reef viewing activities that are possible in a one-day trip. Outer reef pontoons and semi-submarines allow you to view the Great Barrier Reef without getting wet. Semi-Submarines offer a glimpse into the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef corals and marine animals that live there.

Outer reef pontoons & semi-submarine day trips actually work out to be great value for money due to the amount of activities that are included in the ticket price.

By doing an outer reef pontoon & semi-submarine day trip you will see more of the reef than you would at any of the Islands. Outer reef pontoons are located on the very outer reef systems and due to the untouched nature of these reefs you experience the very best corals, fish and marine animals.

Outer reef pontoons & semi-submarine day trips are actually quite good for people who get seasick, the day boats that transport you to the pontoons are large stable catamarans. The most stable way to transit from the mainland to the outer reef pontoons. These boats limit the amount of rocking and swaying due to their size. This offers the most stable transport solution getting to the reefs.

The outer reef pontoons themselves are also very large stable floating platforms that are moored in the calm water sections of the marine park. Outer reef pontoons are the most sea sick friendly way to visit the reef compared to all other vessels traveling to the reef.

Many outer reef pontoons & semi-submarine day trips are excellent options for people with non-diving partners as they offer great snorkelling sites, some of the pontoons have underwater observatories and glass bottom boats. They are like floating islands so being onboard is a great experience in itself.

How do the Outer reef pontoons & semi-submarine day trips work?

Most outer reef pontoons & semi-submarine day trips work around the idea of the actual pontoon (man-made floating island) is permanently moored on the reef and have a larger transfer vessel taking you out to the reef, these pontoons have their own private permits. So only the pontoon operator’s day boat will dock up to the pontoon.

Where do outer reef pontoons & semi-submarine day trips take you?

Due to the high-speed nature of the catamarans that carry you to the reef. The pontoons are located on the very outer barrier reef systems. It generally takes 1-hour and 15-minutes to arrive at the outer barrier reef pontoons.

There are 4 major outer reef pontoons and they are located on the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs from Port Douglas and Norman and Moore Reefs from Cairns.

Quicksilver outer reef cruises have the only pontoon located on the Agincourt ribbon reef systems. These Agincourt reefs systems are located at the very edge of the continental shelf of Australia. A distance off nearly 65klm from land.

What will I see on an outer reef pontoons & semi-submarine day trip?

The outer reefs off Cairns are literally teeming with life and although it is impossible to guarantee exactly what you will see its very common to see white tip and black tip reef sharks, hawksbill sea turtles, sting rays, giant Maori Wrasse (Napoleon Fish), many species of brightly coloured parrotfish, several types of anemone fish, tinny nudibranchs and hundreds of different types of other reef fish and corals.
